How To Dress When Meeting The Parents

Meeting your boyfriend’s parents is a significant moment in your relationship. Congratulations, you’re not casually dating anymore, your beau is taking your relationship to another level. However, for many, this happy occasion can be mortifying and figuring out what to wear can be challenging. But no need to worry, with this styling guide, you will be well prepared

7 Golden Rules

  1. Impress them without being overdressed.
  2. Get to know his parents in advance by asking your boyfriend about their interests. That way you’ll find a platform to communicate on.
  3. If you’re invited to their house, bring flowers, or some chocolate. At a later meeting, you can bring something more casual, like a bottle of red wine!
  4. If you went shopping for new clothes, check that the price tags have been removed. In stressed situations, we miss things like that.
  5. Make sure your shoes aren’t dirty {staining his mom’s carpets will definitely be an awkward moment}.
  6. Make sure your nails look nice – nothing is worse than chipped nail polish. Parents notice things like that.
  7. Check your socks – discovering that your socks have a whole in them, they’re dirty, or have Hello Kitty print on them when you find out that you’re supposed to take your shoes off is another one of those awkward moments.

Going to brunch

A nice brunch early in the day doesn’t require you to dress up. The settings and the mood will be relaxed and casual, and your outfit should reflect this.
  • Make sure that you don’t have a late night the night before and get enough sleep, so you look fresh the next morning.
  • Do not put on too much make-up. Be a natural beauty to win over the “potential future in-laws”.  You want to look like yourself and be comfortable at the same time.
  • Given the time of year I would suggest warm earth tones, but that is also up to you.

Tea Time

Afternoon tea in England is just as important as dinner. If you’re invited for tea at his parents’ house, bring scones, that’s always a plus.
  • Be on time. Not only will your first encounter be strained by your lack of time understanding, but having to wait for tea is like waiting for a Martini after a long day at work.
  • Don’t be over-dressed, but do dress up a bit.

Going to dinner

Picking the perfect dinner outfit can be a tricky one and it all depends on the situation. Are you going to a restaurent, or are you having dinner at their house?
Several factors you need to consider:
  • Are you inviting them for dinner? Go for something you’re acutally able to move in, otherwise you’ll look quite funny serving.
  • If you’re dining out, consider if it a fancy restaurant, or a casual one. You don’t want to look over-dressed.

DRESS/BLAZER/HEELS
All outfits are just ideas. Just a little starter for you to be creative. I chose a really fancy cocktail dress for dinner, but  in combination with a simple blazer. You can wear the blazer for dinner and take it off later. You can also style it up with some accessories.
The main point to remember when meeting the parents is to wear something you’re comfortable in. Don’t try to impress anyone. Be yourself. That will shine through and it will give the parents a chance to see the real you. No matter what the Hollywood movies portray, meeting the parents doesn’t have to be awkward or scary. In general, parents are just happy to see their child happy! So be yourself and be comfortable!
