30 Fashion Trend Resolutions

Trend To Keep: Red

The Look: Make like the classic Hollywood screen sirens and wear candy apple red frocks with matching lipstick. Dress to kill is the motto!

Seen At? Miu Miu spring/summer 2012

Trend To Delete: Midi Skirts

The Look: Suffice to say that even though calf-length skirts DON’T suit everyone, we’ve all been wearing them. The champion style has been block-coloured, pleated midis – will you keep or delete yours?

Seen At? As seen on most major runways and championed by the likes of Lady Gaga, who wore them throughout her promotional trip to London in November 2011

Trend To Keep: Yellow

The Look: Nothing injects electricity into a wardrobe quite like the colour yellow. The fashion desk spotted this hue in soft sorbet lemon shades and in startling bright guises on the spring catwalks. Wear it with beige or deftly contrasted with hot pink for extra style points.

Seen At? Mulberry spring/summer 2012

 Trend To Keep: Pencil Skirts

The Look: The tighter the better and teamed with a spiky stiletto – them’s the rules.

Seen At? Chanel spring/summer 2012

Trend To Keep: Ankle Socks

The Look: It’s official: there’s nothing cuter than a mini skirt, some sky high heels and a pair of ankle socks. Head to Topshop to invest in cartoon ones and really go to town.

Seen At? Mulberry spring/summer 2012

 Trend To Keep: Pastel Mixes

The Look: Take a trip to an old school ice cream parlour to research spring 2012’s colour palette. From Mulberry to Louis Vuitton, the look was all about layering pastel shades together and making oneself look like a very fabulous sundae – sans the cherry on top.

Seen At? Louis Vuitton spring/summer 2012

Trend To Delete: Grey

The Look: The dull days are over. We once wanted to make an understatement in soft charcoal tones to break away from black, but we feel a colour embrace coming on.

Seen At? Haider Ackerman autumn/winter 2011

Trend To Keep: Sporty Couture

The Look: Love it or hate it, sporty chic is sprinting into the forefront of the trend scene. Look out for surfy influences and loose tailoring in satin fabrics for the up-to-the-minute take.

Seen At? Marc Jacobs spring/summer 2012

The Look
: As we welcome Big Bird yellow to our look, it’s au revoir to sequinned stars and astrological prints. DO keep them at the back of your wardrobe though, as stars will always make a comeback (fashion is fickle, see?)

Seen At? Dolce & Gabbana autumn/winter 2011

 Trend To Keep: Overstated Baroque

The Look: This trend is really easy to understand – it’s all about luxe, lavishly embroidered fabrics and outfits compiled with a sense of aristocratic propriety. If in doubt, go forth with extra bling, higher heels and a metallic brocade mini.

Seen At? Gucci spring/summer 2012

Trend To Keep: Gold

The Look: Egyptian, strikingly bright golds are back with a 70s twist, so dig out your fool’s hues.

Seen At? Gucci spring/summer 2012

Trend To Delete: 50s-Influenced Styles

The Look: Box handbags, white gloves, full skirts and twinset cardigans gave us girls a more glamorous spin on dressing, but we’re now considerably more nostalgic for the roaring Twenties.

Seen At? The 50s style was revived in the eyes of the fickle fashion pack thanks to Mad Men, and seen on multiple runways, including Oscar De La Renta autumn/winter 2011

Trend To Delete: One-Print Wonders

The Look: Once upon a time – well, last spring – celebs and stylistas alike preferred to stick to one-print outfits in a less-is-more spirit.

Seen At? Marc Jacobs autumn/winter 2011

 Trend To Keep: Tailored Two-Pieces

The Look: Ladylike fitted jackets and tight pencil skirts are set to be de rigeur for 2012 thanks to influences from unlikely sources such as The Iron Lady, the new Margaret Thatcher biopic, and a progression into the later 60s in Mad Men’s fifth series.

Seen At? Alexander McQueen spring/summer 2012

 Trend To Delete: Silver

The Look: Last year, many metallic threads were steely and cool, but things are set to warm up in 2012 and reach towards gold.

Seen At? Chanel autumn/winter 2011

Trend To Keep: The Great Gatsby / 20s Cocktail Attire

The Look: With F. Scott Fitzgerald’s book The Great Gatsby due for release on the big screen courtesy of Baz Luhrmann late in 2012, the fashion world has been jazz-dancing towards flapper dresses, skull caps and long reams of glass beads to celebrate.

Trend To Delete: Full Skirts & Early 60s Dresses

The Look: For months the fashion team has been struggling to squeeze our meringue-like layers of tutu and underskirt underneath desks because of this trend. The full, 50s-style skirt has changed the once slinky silhouette of the British high street, but slinky styles are set to return once more in a bid for balance.
Seen On? All over the 2010 and 2011 red carpets, as pioneered by Betty Draper in the hit TV series Mad Men

Trend To Keep: Neons

The Look: If it’s shockingly bright pink, aqua, lime or yellow, then wear it with camel tones for the perfect, of-the-moment contrast.

Seen On? Twilight star Nikki Reed pioneered this spring trend early and started wearing blinding brights in October 2011
 Trend To Delete: Feather Headdresses

The Look: Last summer, festival-lovers topped off their shabby chic apparel with a few strands of boho feathers or sported an OTT, chieftan-inspired headdress. It’s been boiling over for a while now, but suffice to say that the feather headdress has had its trendy outing and can go back into the museum of our stylish youth for a few  more years.

Seen On? Major stars on the festival scene and many style conscience party girls

 Trend To Delete: Pleats

The Look: From ladylike chiffon skirts to preppy dresses, 2010-11 saw the revival of the pleat. We’re asking for a break now, please.

Seen On? Sarah Jessica Parker & co, including half the nation - in the form of pleated, bright midi skirts (remember?)
 Trend To Keep: Oversized Hats

The Look: Some of the best fashion trends are not born of the catwalk; instead, our favourite celebs and the stylistas on the streets champion an accessory that sets the Western world alight. Cue the oversized trilby, the 70s floppy hat and the off-beat boater. We hope the hat is here to stay.

Seen On? Kate Moss, Jameela Jamil, Lindsay Lohan, SJP... The list goes on.

 Trend To Delete: Punky Tees

The Look: The world and its poodle loves a punky T-shirt. From Alexa Chung to all in GLAMOUR.com towers, we dug out vintage rock tops and achingly cool, love-worn Ts in 2011. We’ll be retiring them to the middle section of our wardrobes for now to let them rest.

Seen On? Jessie J and half of the Western world

 Trend To Delete: Suspenders

The Look: Last year, we all dared to bare our thighs in a cheeky bid to look like little mistresses. Well, enough now, ladies – it’s time to show off those pins in a sweeter way.

Seen On? Fashionistas all over the UK, as led by Pixie Lott and her enviable pins

Trend To Keep: Mixing & Matching Print Combinations

The Look: When it comes to mixing prints in 2012, the rules are that there are no rules. Clash away!

Seen At? Miu Miu spring/summer 2012

 Trend To Delete: Understated Baroque

The Look: Just before the catwalks really pulled out the stops, designers were dabbling in splendid patterns with a stately-home wallpaper quality. But learn this lesson fast: the 2012 update on the baroque trend is high octane and must not be done by halves. Layer up last season’s pieces with more because more is so much more. Got that?

Seen At? Jonathan Saunders autumn/winter 2011

Trend To Keep: Appliqué Florals

The Look: If you love florals, why not show off your love in 3D? Appliqué flowers and ruffled embellishments are so Chanel – and bang on trend for the stylish year ahead, dontcha know.

Seen At? Chanel spring/summer 2012

Trend To Delete: Folk

The Look: Native-look and tribal prints sprung up in 2011 as the surprise trend of the year. Everyone was wearing this look teamed with fringed boots and cut-off shorts on the festival circuit, so this summer, we’re moving on.

Seen At? Etoile Isabel Marant autumn/winter 2011

Trend To Delete: Digital Florals & Painterly Botanical Prints

The Look: Florals are most certainly bang on the money for 2012, but it’s the type of print that will either subtract or add points to your fashion credentials. Abstract, painterly prints are rated by the front row pack but heavily digitized styles are just not as cool, if their absence on spring/summer 2012 runways is anything to go by.

Seen At? Erdem autumn/winter 201

Trend To Delete: Orange

The Look: From twists of tangerine accessories to fiery, burnt orange colours, this hue has been hitherto unapologetically at the top of many stars’ style agendas.

Seen At? Burberry autumn/winter 2011

Trend To Keep: Maxis & Minis

The Look: It’s all about extremes now, so pick north or south.
