TopShop Pulls “Too-Thin” Model Images—So How Thin Is Too Thin?

It’s the age-old debate of the modeling industry…how thin is too thin? TopShop seemingly went too far with images on their website of model Codie Young, which had received a ton of negative criticism from anti-eating disorder groups in the U.K. as well as numerous complaints from viewers. Last night, the British retailer finally pulled the images of the size-zero model. While TopShop insisted that the model is in fact healthy, they released a statement saying “Topshop is proud of its heritage of celebrating individual-looking girls who offer an alternative more unusual beauty, however we take your comments very seriously. As you may have noticed we have taken down that specific image at the earliest opportunity.”
Young then took to her website to dispute rumors of anorexia and fight back against the claims. Helen Davies of the U.K.-based anorexia charity told the Daily Mail: “For girls to see pictures of models who are this thin suggests that it’s OK to be like that but it’s clearly not. Topshop needs to take some responsibility and use healthy models.” We have to agree with this statement, and while this certainly isn’t the first scary-skinny model controversy, we’re sure that it wont be the last.

Recent controversies have included Victoria’s Secret model Candice Swanepoel (above, center), who made a bony appearance in a bikini which shocked the world. Super-slim Alexa Chung has also had to deny various criticisms of her extremely thin frame, which she claims is natural. Of course who can forget the tragic death of French model Isabelle Caro who died last year at just 28, after years of battling with anorexia.

Urban Outfitters had a similar controversy to TopShop, in which they pulled a pro-anorexia shirt from their website which said “Eat Less” on the front (worn by a girl who seemed to believe in this negative slogan). Although it’s been taken down from their online site, unfortunately you can still dig it up in stores.

Supermodel Bar Refaeli who promotes an image of beauty and health took to her Twitter to say: “I get so sad when I see 15-year-old pale extremely skinny models at the agency looking all shaky and hungry … when will it end?!?!?” We agree 100% with this bold statement as well.

We have to admit that we’re Team-TopShop when it comes to this controversy: we think they did the right thing by pulling images of a hungry-looking model and should be setting a good example of promoting a healthy body image by showing more “normal” looking girls.
